What is the problem? |
Climate change has recently become a real concern to today’s society. Everyone is talking about it, but do we really know how much of a part we play in it? Human activity over the past 150 years is resulting in unprecedented changes to the Earth’s climate. Everything from driving a car to flying a plane, even cooking your Sunday roast, increases the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere which increases the amount of heat that is trapped in our atmosphere. Each household in the UK generates around 6 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide a year. This is 5 times more than the rubbish that we throw away.
The average household could save up to 1.5 tonnes of CO2 a year by making their home more energy efficient.

Everyday Appliance Savings
|
- Don’t leave appliances, such as TVs, Hi-fis and DVD players, on standby. Remember not to leave appliances like mobile phones or laptops on charge unnecessarily.
- Wash your laundry at 30ºC. Washing at 30ºC can save 40% of the energy used to wash at higher temperatures.
- If you’re not filling up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher, use the half-load or economy programme.
- Install at least three Energy Saving Recommended light bulbs. They last up to 12 times longer than ordinary bulbs and could save up to £100 over the lifetime of the bulb.
- Only boil as much water as you need. But remember to cover the element if you’re using an electric kettle
- Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.
- Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
- Is your water too hot? Your cylinder thermostat shouldn’t need to be set higher than 60ºC/140ºF.
- Turn your thermostat down by 1ºC. Reducing your room temperature by 1ºC could cut your heating bills by up to 10% and save you around £40 per year.
- Don’t use the car for short journeys. You can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and air pollution by reducing the amount of fuel you use. That means walking, cycling or taking the bus whenever you are able to.

Other Ideas for Savings at home
|
- If everyone installed cavity wall insulation, we’d cut CO2 emissions by over 6.8 million tonnes, enough to fill over 1.3 million hot air balloons.
- If every home could add 270mm loft insulation we’d save almost 4 million tonnes of CO2, the same as the annual emissions of around 710,000 homes.
- If everyone put an insulation jacket on their hot water tank, we’d cut CO2 emissions by 670,000 tonnes - enough to fill around 134,000 hot air balloons.
- If everyone with gas central heating installed a new condensing boiler, we’d cut emissions by 13.1 million tonnes. We’d also save almost £1.8 billion per year on our energy bills and enough energy to heat over 3.7 million homes for a year.
- Install cavity wall insulation. A third of the heat lost in an uninsulated home is through the walls. Cavity wall insulation is easy to have fitted and could save you between £130 and £160 per year on your heating bills.
- Top up your loft insulation to 270mm (approximately 10.5 inches). Loft insulation is so straightforward that you can even install it yourself. Insulating your loft is not expensive and a standard 270mm layer could save as much as £180 to £220 a year on fuel bills.
- Install a condensing boiler. An old boiler is usually a wasteful one. Replacing it with a condensing boiler could save you a third on your heating bills.
- A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they’re fully turned off!
