The number 1080 refers to the lines of vertical resolution and the letter p stands for progressive scan as apposed to interlace scan that is less smooth and can cause flicker.

Freesat is a free to air digital satellite service providing an alternative to Freeview. A joint venture between BBC and ITV, Freesat channels are available without subscription once you have purchased a receiver. These popular BBC and ITV programs are broadcast in high definition and Freesat have said they expect to add around 30 channels each month.

Traditional TV's display visual images at 50Hz frames per second. 100Hz runs at twice that amount by creating an extra unique frame between each of the existing 50 frames.
