Taiwan-based backlight unit (BLU) maker Radiant Opto-Electronics has recently gained certification for its TV LED BLU from Samsung Electronics and is expected to start mass production in the third quarter, according to industry sources.

Radiant's LED BLU for Samsung adopts the direct type technology, the sources said. Radiant indicated that although the edge type technology will require fewer LEDs, there are still difficulties to be overcome.

Samsung aims to ship over 2.5 million LED TVs this year, which will account for 10% of its total LCD TV shipments for the year, the sources added.
